Stateside Puerto Rican Population Jumps by 700,000

New Census Bureau estimates show that the Puerto Rican population jumped 700,000 or nearly 21 percent between 2000 and 2008.

The figures come from the American Community Survey not the 10-year Census, which is being conducted as I write. That makes it hard to determine what's the ratio of increase due to migration from the island versus births in the states. Obviously, it's both, but does one tip the scale more than the other? That's the question.

Puerto Ricans do not have the highest birth rate among Hispanics. That distinction goes to Mexicans, who are the youngest Hispanic group. Cubans tend to be the oldest and Puerto Ricans tend to fall somewhere in the middle.

But Puerto Ricans are known for their circular migration. That is what we call the va y viene or come and go of people. It's not unusual for Puerto Ricans to migrate to the states for few years, then migrate back to the island—and maybe even return to the states at some point. It's all part of a historical pattern.

During good economic times, Puerto Ricans may migrate to the states to take advantage of a jumping job market. When things cool down, they may return to the island—or if they're on the island, stay put. All of this has been well documented by demographers, sociologists and others.

It's clear that the economy was jumping up until late 2008, when it fell off a financial cliff. The economy in Puerto Rico has fared even worse.

I'm inclined to say that the population increase reflects the good economic times between 2000 and 2008.

At a Glance:
   Mexicans ... 20.9 million
Stateside Puerto Ricans ... 4.1 million (plus another 3.8 million in Puerto Rico)
   Cubans ... 1.6 million
   Salvadorans ... 1.5 million
   Dominicans ...  1.2 million
Total Latino population ... 49.3 million

More and more people are coming to American from Mexico and this is the reason why there population is increasing in USA. There are many Mexicans who have entered USA illegally.

Yes, you are right, Elijah. There are many Mexicans who have come to the United States, both legally and illegally, especially in the past 10 years or so. However, the Puerto Rican population group has a different profile. They are all U.S. citizens.

I don't consider the puerto ricans US citizens, and they also need to go back where they came from!

I agree. It's ridiculous that white people are an outcast in their own country these days.

Hey Kristina maybe you don't consider puertorricans Americans but the goberment does that mean that your opinion is nothing and I am so sorry that you can't do nothing just open your mouth oh and Jamie too get over and close your mouth

Let me guess...you're a puertorican?? Or was it that you just failed every english class? Sorry, but telling us to shut our mouths still doesn't make you "latinos" Americans. If they weren't born here & they choose to come here (as if they were invited) then they better damn well become 100% fluent in OUR language. You don't see us going to their countries and flaunting our flag & refusing to speak mexican. I dont think I've seen one car with one of them in it that didnt have a puertorican, mexican or cuban flag somewhere in it or on it. Seriously if you guys are SO proud of your countries do us a favor & stay there & stop invading ours. Simple as that! =)

Obviously, ignorant, non educated red neck savages such as your self Kristina are the reason why there is so much unnessecary hatred toward hispanics in this country. Your poison filled thoughts stem from your inability to provide yourself with financial freedom, peace of mind, and overall happiness. You envy the entrepenuerial motivation that is cultivated from years of suppression from people like you. Sad to see you can not conduct yourself in a civil manner during a dialogue. I'm glad everyone can view your thoughts and realize how someone like yourself, due to lack of any kind of education, coupled with low moral values interpret Americas changing times.open your eyes, your no longer the majority. spew your hatred elsewhere your worthless excuse for white trash, your in for a rude awaking....

and you probably fucked your first cousin.

Wow that is funny you keep yourself "anonymous". I wonder why. Anyway, all of your assumptions definitely prove your ignorance. You don't know me from a hole in the wall. I am extremely well educated & have much more financial freedom than anyone I could possibly think of. Also, white trash? I never said I was white & I am definitely the farthest thing from a "red neck". But I would expect all the childish name-calling from someone like yourself. I also never said I have hatred towards hispanics. I'm just stating the truth....every kind of "latino" out there just walks into our country, refuses to learn english, gets a job, gets help from our government & then will still look down on us Americans and proudly wave their flag everywhere. This IS a problem and it is sad that you obviously don't see it, or at least see the wrong in it.

hahahaha!!! Thank you, I needed that laugh. I have no idea what that has to do with anything, but it was funny.
For you write something that immature and random it makes it very clear that I have pissed you off, mission accomplished! =D
Thanks again!!

Hahaha!!!! You are so funny Kristina! The first thing I have to tell you is that you need Jesus! And believe it or not, i do not hate you for what you said. I am a Latino and I am studying as an international student in the US. I have to tell you that you are stereotyping, not all the Latinos are like you said they are, just look around and you will see what I mean. In Hispanics countries like mine, we receive people from other countries with open arms and try to give them the best of us. We do not mistreat the immigrants. And I am not saying all Americans do that, but if just sad to see that a few American do that. Hope you understand my position Kristina, have a blessed day! God bless You! And Merry Christmas!

Yeah I have taken a look around me, and 9 out if 10 immigrants DO flaunt their flag and look down on us Americans, while OUR government helps them out as if they belong here. It is just ridiculous.
The ones who come here legally and are 100% fluent in our language, that's fine. Any other way, not fine. And I sure don't need you or anyone else telling me I need "jesus".

well am late to this party, but all I need to say is to Kuntstina is, If you don't like the situation in your country, then do 2 things. Move like the immigrants did when they didnt like what was going on in their conuntry, or 2 get into policts to TRY and make a change, cause if not, then all you are is a bigot expressing your hatred on the internet with no results to show for it. What a contributor.

And before you try to make a comeback by pointing out the fact that I misspelled in my response, remember to take a look at the person you stand for. BIGOT!!!!

Wow this conversation is actually so outdated. Please let me remind you that unless you are a Native American you as well are or decended from immigrants. What you are doing has been done to many and maybe at one time to your ancestors. I really don't think that you understand how this country was founded because if you did you would not have so much anger in you when you look at other nationalities. I agree when others migrate to another country they should know their customs and language but that doesn't mean they should give up their own. The United States is they way it is becuase it is comprised of so many unique people and customs and that should never change. Ignorance stinks and it is a shame that it will never go away. Today it is about hispanics tomorrow it will be about group. Just remember Sunday is the 10 year anniversary of a tragic event that didn't matter what nationality you were. We stood together regardless. Maybe that should be what you should focus on instead of hating what has been how we the United States was created.
